Alan Burgess tree trunk detail

Alan Burgess lives and works in Roydon about five miles down stream from Parndon Mill. His paintings are mostly landscapes of local scenes and also of the Lake District.  He mainly works in oil paint but also uses acrylics and watercolour. For drawings he uses a variety of materials which sometimes lead to mixed media. Increasingly he has been captivated by trees and has studied their mechanisms for coping with adverse conditions.
He has produced a number of multiple works by grouping paintings together. These include ancient oak trees in the grounds of Hatfield House and, currently, studies of ash trees.
A few years ago, Alan Burgess embarked on one of the most ambitious projects of his painting career. The trees forming the Tree Council's nominated Fifty Great British Trees were originally chosen to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee and remain a fascinating cross-section of Britain's wonderful tree heritage. The aim of the project was to paint them all. Working from studies done in a variety of media, on the spot, Alan Burgess  produced a series of oil paintings each 60cm by 45cm. These have been shown in galleries around the country, sometimes as one work or else grouped in various combinations.

A two poster set showing all 50 paintings of the Great British Trees is available from The Tree Council or from the artist. £12.50 inc. postage.
