etchings, woodcuts, lithographs,
drawings and oil paintings Michael Carlo is a renowned and established print maker, having in his early days worked with Edward Bawden and latterly with the Curwen Studio. He has lived and worked in the same Suffolk village, just over the Essex border, since the late 1970s. He has specialised in landscapes which document changes in the local scenery over nearly 30 years. His technique has varied over this time - first establishing a reputation for his screen prints and moving on to specialise in woodcuts. He says that his works are built on the same premise as many jazz pieces, the theme is the same, but each time it is played it is different. He was initiated into stone lithography in 1960 at Colchester School of Art. His work then as now is landscape based. Working on a stone was like working on the land. He enjoyed the hard labour and the toughness of it. At the Royal College of Art in 1995 he won the K.M.P. Lithography prize. He now works on stones in his own studio. In May 2006 he was invited by The Curwen Studio to do a set of twelve lithographs on large zinc plates. Michael was very keen to see how things developed, being one half of the relationship between artist and printer. The results are a fascinating set of 12 images that have a similar theme, but all are very different. They all reflect the view he sees everyday, always the same, but at the same time always different. His work features in countless collections including The Tate Gallery, Laing Art Gallery and The University of Yale in the USA. |
